Thursday 17th September – Sixteen Foot Drain

Last minute decision after the zeds. Bit more successful than last time, as evening arrived.

Found the perfect swim. Prey fish everywhere and plenty of shelter for them, and the odd predator on the feed. Felt perfect that night.

Anyway just at twilight, one of the buzzers sprang into action, and line tore off the reel. Struck into a nice sized eel, which succeeded in taking the whole roach dead bait. Lovely looking thing. Half hour later it happened again, but I missed on this occasion, it then went quite for an hour or so, then the buzzers screamed off again, and something was taking line. Struck into what felt like nice fish, then the reel decided to fail. Lost the bugger. Most likely a pike, but was hoping it may of been a zed. Just as I was packing up, I had yet another run, but it dropped the bait, before I had a chance to strike. Checked the bait. It had the classic zander puncture marks. Then that was it. Good to know the zeds are still there.

Will be back again very soon. Best evenings fishing  so far.

  1. Hi,
I am looking to go Pike/Zander fishing in the wider Ely area of the Fens with my brother who will visit me. Can you tell us some good spots? We want to go with Spinners Jigs etc…
Also is there a map where you can see which rivers/drains/lake you can fish and were to get tickets for the waters?
Can you just walk along a drain and fish or do you have to ask the farmer for this? If yes, how can I find out who is the owner of the land?
Is there any good fishing for pike on the Ouse from a boat and is it possible to rent a boat somewhere around Ely?

    • Hi Marc,
There is so much water in the area that is excellent Predator fishing, it’s difficult to summarize. However the ones I tend to visit are the Ely Ouse at Ten Mile Bank. Very good predator fishing, especially this time of year. Then you have the River Lark at Prickwillow. You can buy tickets on the bank from both these waters, which are regularly bailiffed. Then of course you have the Sixteen foot which isn’t miles away from Ely.

As for land drains, I would only stick with ones that have public footpaths along them. Lots of them are private, and have steep banks so can also be dangerous.

      Hope this helps.

      John
