Well decided to visit the twenty foot this time as has been a while.
I fished a new stretch, which was the most attractive stretch of fenland drain I have fished for a long time. Arrived at sun rise and to the site of buzzards gliding above the trees and barn owls hunting along the banks, but best of all, there were no other anglers. Had the whole stretch of drain to myself, so was able to do a bit of wandering. At the first swim, I had nothing until late morning. The buzzers beeped a couple a times and the line was going from slack to tight constantly, and the rod was bending. I was getting excited as this was on my big bluey bait. Eventually I struck, but missed it. Bugger! I’m now thinking it was a jack trying to tackle a bait to big for it, but could be wrong! I fished this swim until around lunchtime, but the runs had dried up, so I decided to move to the next spot.
The next spot was a bit different to the first. Bank was a bit higher and had more features. Reed beds each side of me. Again after an hour or so, I had another take. Struck into the fish and bang, I had it. Had a nice scrap for about 5 minutes, felt sizeable then it let go. After uttering a few swear words, I checked the bait and it had been destroyed. The teeth marks were a good size. Unfortunetly, I had no more runs after this.
Anyway, despite losing a couple of fish, the day was great and a great opportunity to take a few photos. Only three more weekends left of the river season, so determined to get back out before the season ends!
