Saturday May 23rd – Sunday May 24th – Fenland Fisheries, Earith

Hi All,

When will this weather warm up and settle down!

I haven’t been fishing that much over the last few weeks. Just the odd few hours in the evenings here and there, and nothing much to report

The main reason I think for my regular blanks recently, has been the weather. It just doesn’t seem to want to settle. One week it is lovely and warm, the next cold again. The fish just seeem to be rather confused, and not that active.

Heres an example. I visited Fenland Fisheries in Earith this weekend and had a go after the carp. First time I have visited this venue for a few years.

Two friends of mine arrived Friday and I joined them last night. The weather was overcast, with a slight breeze, and warm. They were having fish from the off. Biggest was 26ib.

However the wind changed, and the temperatures dropped in a matter of hours, and the fishing just switched off.  Just a few bits were coming out here and there.  I had nothing all night and struggled today for a bite, aswell as a couple of others on the lake. Also the fish haven’t even thought about starting spawning. Usually, they are thinking about it now.

This up and down weather also seems to be affecting the rivers aswell. Usually this time of year, the Great Ouse in Ely city centre down to the far end of the coopers stretch, is full of fry and lined with lillies. I walked down there Thursday, during my lunch break, and didn’t see any fry at all in the usual places or any signs of spawning activity. Also the lillies beds were very patchy. Bearing in mind the river season starts in three weeks from tomorrow. I think it could well be a slow start to it, unless the weather decides to settle and warm up. Only time can tell!
