Friday July 7th – Great Ouse Backwater

Another evening session after work, as struggling with one car still. Visited a Great Ouse back water which I have driven over countless times, but never fished it, so decided to give it ago.

After eventually finding a parking space, I walked down to the river. Came to a small weir pool, but wanted to start quite a way down so kept own walking.

The river was very weedy, so spent a while trying to find a hole in the weed bed. Eventually I found one, and threw some luncheon meat into it. I could see fish attacking it, but couldn’t work out what they were, so I just flicked a ledger rig out and waited in anticipation. After about twenty minutes, the rod hooped round, felt a kick, but lost it in the weed. Was a chub finally. After spooking the swim, I moved to the next swim, and found a very tantalising spot. Chucked some free offerings in and was in again, very quickly. After a nice struggle, a lovely eel graced the net.

After a few sessions, further up the stream I then headed back to the weir pool, and fished there for a couple of hours.

After chucking out some free offerings, I saw one of the chub take some luncheon meat on the drop, so was feeling positive. I cast out, and within a few minutes I had a nice chub. It was like this for the rest of the evening, which was fantastic.

In the end I had four chub, and loads of good sized eels.

Heading back in the winter, when the weed dies back.

  1. Nice haul of chub!
I only ever seem to find the eels in that weir pool…
Had some nice lumps further downstream, but the weed seems to be getting worse by the day at the moment!
