Saturday 13th December – Sixteen Foot Drain

Has been a while due to Christmas, but have finally got round to update the website. This was probably the most memorable day I have had in the years I have been fishing.

We arrived at the location just at first light, and was very lucky to stumble on a spot, full of prey fish. Dimpling the surface everywhere. Three of us went. My mates were lure fishing for the day and I stuck with, dead baits. Within the first half hour, one of my mates banked a twelve pound beauty on the lure rod, then about half an hour or so later whilst I was taking some photos of the fenland landscape. My buzzer beeped then there there was the clonk of the drop back indicator hitting the bank stick.

After a great fight, we got her into the net and slipped her into a weighing sling. We forgot zero our scales and it registered 28ib! After zeroing another set of scales, the final weight was 25ib 1oz!

We were all gob smacked and I was shaking like a leaf! After a few photos, she went back gracefully into the depths of the drain and we all had a celabratory cup of coffee! This was a special fish for me, as it was my first twenty+ pike.

After the excitement of this catch, I missed a second run, and we moved to the next swim as the runs just dried up.

No runs here, but could see potential here for zander. Hopefully will get a go in this swim, before the season is finished.

The day was spent wandering along the drain, and we had no more runs between us. I didn’t care and was happy with what I had, and was in great company and great surroundings.

I think this proves, that the big girls are still in the fens, you just need to work hard to catch them. My hard work trying to get one of these girls certainly paid off on this day, and I will never forget it, and there is still time to get an even bigger speciman!
