Finally the rivers are starting to fine down after all the rain we have had, so I fancied a change from the drains, and had a go for another one of my favourite species, the chub.
This was just going to be a roving session, just armed with the essentials. My avon quiver tip rod, rucksack with basic terminal tackle, landing net and my bait, cheese paste.
I got to the river just after dawn. I baited up a few swims before getting the rod out. After about half an hour, I cast out towards the tree. Within twenty minutes, the tip twitched a couple of times, and pulled right round. First chub of the day. Between the 3/4ib mark.
I had one more smaller chub from this swim, then moved to the second which I baited up earlier. Again within a few minutes I had a couple more fish, and lost a third.
It was like this throughout the day. It definitely pays off to bait swims first, leave for a few minutes, then get a line out, and work through the pre-baited swims, as the day goes on. Just to give the chub a chance to gain there confidence.
This was my best days chubbing for a long time, and I will be back after them very, very soon.
My next trip will be back after the pike. On this trip, I will be visiting the Middle Level drain, and giving the more remote stretches a go.
Keep an eye on my posts!
