Friday 15th January – Fenland Drain

Today was going to be a long session, as my wife had a girly night in Friday night. I had originally planned to visit the River Stour in Suffolk, but car problems put a stop to that.

After getting the car sorted, It was too late to drive to Suffolk unfortunately, so I headed out into the fens instead.

I eventually arrived at my favourite drain mid morning.

The conditions were hard. Very cold and bright, but the prey fish didn’t seem that worried.

I had a different approach today. I wanted to try the feeder rodĀ for a change, to try and get some of the quality roach that live here, and catch some baits for the zander later. Of course the pike rod was out aswell!

The roach fishing was fun, but nothing special. I had plenty of small roach and a few skimmers, nothing massive. The pike were very quite. I only had one run all day, and that was around lunchtime. After a few bobs, the float slid beneath the surface, struck into the fish and it was lovely chunky looking pike. Had been feeding very well. This was caught on float fished bluey.

After a very quite day after the pike, I then had a go after the Zeds. Unfortunately, this was a big flat blank. They were not having it, even though the prey fish were everywhere. Eventually the very cold weather beat me, and I headed home via the local kfc!

Not put off by this, I will be heading back to this drain again very soon.
