Well fancied a break from the pike for MY last few river sessions of the season.
Started off at Clayhithe Bridge. Fished the feeder and also had a pike rod out. Tried every bait possible, including some cheese paste on the feeder rod, I made the night before but still nothing. I then called it a day about lunchtime and moved to my next spot.
Upper Cam – Grantchester Meadows
Well after blanking at Clayhithe Bridge, I moved to a venue I used to visit when I was a little boy. Very hard water, but once cracked the fishing is fantastic. I have had some fantastic bream, roach, eels, pike and of course the chub from here.
Because I was limited for time, I was just using the wandering approach, and fishing the top end of the meadows. I also wanted to try a different bait. My homemade cheese paste.
My first swim was a gap between some hawthorn bushes. I baited up with a few bits of cheesepaste. Left it for about twenty minutes, then just simply dropped a very basic ledger rig into the flow, and let the current carry my bait into the hole in the bushes.
After a ten minute wait, the rod hooped round and a 3ib very fat Chub graced the net.
After a couple of photos and recasts, I then moved to my next swim. Again I pre baited it about ten minutes before and then cast the bait out. Had one small chub and missed a cracking bite After missing that bite, it went quite so I moved on.
I eventually arrived at a cracking swim with a willow tree overhanging and a nice raft. Flicked my bait out and was pulling in some cracking roach. Again, on cheesepaste.
It was getting dark after the bites dried up here, so I packed up and headed home. A cracking afternoon was had.
